Vision Statement: Inspiring children to be positive changemakers

In keeping with the vision of GEMS Education the founder and chairman, Mr. Sunny Varkey, GEMS Modern Academy (GMA) assures every student a world-class education that is wholesome and exciting. Spread over 120,000 square meters, this state-of-the-art institution is located in the heart of Dubai and has been making its mark on the local and global education scene for the last 38 years.

The school is recognized and accredited by Ministry of Education, Dubai, UAE, the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICSE - New Delhi, India) and the International Baccalaureate to offer a continuum Primary Years Programme (since April 2021), Middle Years Programme (since February 2023) and the Diploma Programme (since September 2014).

GEMS Modern Academy is a CIS school, a Round Square school, a Green Flag school and the only school in the UAE to receive the Dubai SME certified incubator status.

'Modern' as it is fondly called, lives up to its name as it strives ceaselessly to nurture 21st-century learners who will become active, sensitive and responsible world citizens. Our educational philosophy aims at making students independent and lifelong learners who will contribute positively to society. The faculty and management work passionately to keep the balance between modern educational demands and the wholesome traditional values that the institution embodies.

In addition to being rated as an 'Outstanding' school since 2011 by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority of Dubai, the school has also been awarded the coveted Hamdan Award for Distinguished Academic Excellence and School Administration. The highly qualified and committed faculty ensures that all pupils at Modern strive to reach their goals and prepares them to take their place in the world.

Modern's alumni regularly receive admission to Ivy League and other world renowned universities and the school boasts of a 100% placement record.

Modern offers the IBDP to students of grades 11 and 12, with twenty eight individual subject options available. We are very pleased with the achievements of our ninth graduating batches since 2016. May 2024 batch achieved an average of 33.1 points with three toppers securing a score of 43 points. This balance between strong academic performance and fantastic experiential outcomes from areas such as CAS is a hallmark of our growing Diploma Programme.

This academic year, GEMS Modern Academy has successfully expanded its MYP programme to include MYP 4, continuing our commitment to offering a well-rounded, inquiry-based education. Our department teams crafted MYP overviews that integrate essential elements from the DP curriculum and also align with international benchmarking standards. These efforts ensure that students are equipped with both foundational and advanced skills across all subjects.

Aligned with the MYP philosophy, we continue to emphasize the importance of understanding and valuing the learning process. Our program encourages students to explore diverse perspectives, apply conceptual knowledge in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts, and engage in meaningful Service as Action opportunities linked to each discipline. This year we have offered students more opportunities of interdisciplinary units (IDUs), fostering connections across disciplines and enabling students to develop critical thinking and collaboration skills.

The Community Project remains a core part of our MYP 3 curriculum, with a new group of students showcasing their growth and service outcomes in this year's Community Project Exhibition. This event highlights the students' research, critical thinking, and self-management abilities, laying a foundation for the Personal Project in MYP 5 and preparing them for future contributions to global and community initiatives.

With the addition of MYP 4, we are now actively preparing our students for the upcoming MYP e-Assessments in May 2026. These preparations ensure that our students are not only ready for the rigor of e-Assessments but are also on a solid path toward success in the Diploma Programme.

Our Primary Years Programme Curriculum stems from age-appropriate curricular standards in a global context, carefully and creatively constructed by our PYP faculty and the Deans' Department through a process of reflection and collaboration. The curriculum outlines knowledge, skills, understanding, attitudes, and values pupils are expected to learn in the course of their transformative experience in school.

The Program standards and practices offer both an aspirational (the standards and practices) and baseline (the requirements and specifications) framework of what it means to be an IB World School. Thus, we mindfully use the IB PYP framework and philosophy for pedagogy and align the core curriculum objectives with the IB PYP scopes and sequences for the requisite PYP subjects.

The curriculum contributes to fulfilling the vision of GEMS Modern Academy, 'Inspiring children to be positive change-makers'. It is enriched by incorporating activities that are also embedded in the core values of GEMS Education and Jewels of Kindness Program. In line with Ministry regulations and compliance, the curriculum includes Arabic, Moral, Social and Cultural Studies for all students and Islamic Education for Muslim students. To fulfil the UAE National Priorities and achieve the set National Agenda targets for the school, we also ensure that the curriculum continues to align with international assessment frameworks such as TIMSS, PIRLS, and PISA. The curriculum is reviewed annually and is open to modification.

As an all-inclusive school, Modern values student diversity and understands the difficulties faced by students of determination. We strive to provide equity in education to ensure all learners have the necessary tools to succeed, by reducing barriers to learning with their peers in a common learning environment. Inclusion is truly at the heart of everything we do at Modern. It helps create a more positive sense of belonging with the community and teaches vital life lessons in respect, tolerance, and resilience.
