Guangdong Country Garden School is located in Foshan, Guangdong Province, the central region of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Founded in 1994, the school was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to run the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP) in 2001 and the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 2011. It is one of the earliest IB world schools in mainland China to implement PYP, MYP and DP programmes simultaneously, with a 15-year CNC&IB integrated curriculum from kindergarten to Year 12. It has more than 4,800 students and 700 teachers from all over the world.
As an IB World School, we focus on lifelong learning and inclusive education by delivering a balanced curriculum that focuses on the well-being of teachers and students, fostering resilience with a growth mindset, and believing that every child can succeed and make a difference. The faculty and staff of the school are committed to preparing students to attain the following ten attributes:
Covering an area of nearly 200,000m2, the school has a beautiful environment with first-class facilities, such as the STEAM experimental building, two indoor heated swimming pools, opera house, observatory, gym, outward bound spaces, English village and Starmoon garden, etc. The campus is built around a mountain, providing a good ecological environment for students to explore and facilitate the development of various kinds of inquiry courses based on the community.
Our PYP mainly focuses on six transdisciplinary themes. The 42 sub-topics of inquiry "transcend" the boundaries of subjects, helping our kids have a better understanding of the world from different perspectives. The PYP Exhibition for the fifth grade, allows students to choose a topic of their interest from current issues, and work as a group to figure out the potential solutions to the issues. It is a powerful celebration and showcase of student learning and development.
Based on the six global contexts, the MYP programme offers a range of challenging courses and activities to help students think creatively, critically and reflectively. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, and encourages students to make connections between their studies in subjects and with the real world. Additionally, the emphasis on Service and Action and the personal project help to set students up for success in the IB Diploma Programme.
The six subject groups in DP programme are provided in a balanced way, providing more than 30 subjects to meet the need of personalized learning. The three core elements of TOK, EE and CAS further improve students' thinking skills, research skills, self-management skills and collaboration skills. The IB teachers actively become IBEN members, where 42 of them take the role of the IB examiners and workshop leaders, helping to build a learning community.
The school's signature courses, such as the Leadership courses, the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) program, and career planning course, combine elements of action and adventure, service and responsibility, and cross-boundary and cooperation in a fun and challenging way to ensure the balanced academic, mental, social and physical development of students.
Leadership programs are based on student's age and cognitive development. The Research and Hiking Trip in PYP with the topic of "Children of the World, Sharing the Earth" provides students with comprehensive mental, physical and spiritual exercise. In the MYP Culture Immersion Trips in Guangdong Province, nearly 30 categories of Chinese cultural phenomena are deeply experienced and explored, while more than 30 social service activities have been carried out. In the high school section, Cycling the Silk Road, China Week Community Service and The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award further enhance the leadership skills of students. The China Week Community Service initiated by DP students, which started in 2004, has continued for 18 years, spanning 26 provinces and cities, with more than 5,000 students participating and serving more than 360 elementary schools in remote areas. By volunteer teaching, caring for the sick, orphans, the elderly and children, raising funds for libraries situated in mountainous elementary schools, and collaborating with NGOs to make students' voices heard internationally, students truly grow into caring global citizens. In addition, the school offers more than 100 CAS activities on and off campus. Each student is assigned a tutor, with whom the student meets regularly to keep track of their academic progress and engagement in CAS activities.
