Founded in 1955, Rochambeau, The French International School of Washington DC provides a safe and caring environment that welcomes students of all backgrounds and nationalities, nurturing them to become plurilingual, confident, and open-minded critical thinkers. Our multicultural students graduate with the French Baccalauréat or International Baccalaureate, two academically balanced and challenging curricula with schools all over the world. Rochambeau belongs to the AEFE Network of French Schools Abroad, the Mission Laique Française network and is an International Baccalaureate school. Rochambeau is also accredited by the AIMS, the Association of Independent Schools in Maryland and by The Maryland State Department of Education.
Our beautiful two campuses in Bethesda, Maryland, located a short distance from one another, are the home to a vibrant international community representing more than 80 nationalities. Students can start as young as age 2, acquiring proficiency in both French and English. The maternelle (preschool) program, noted as the "crown jewel of the French school system," emphasizes play, written and oral skills, and learning to live in a community. Students appreciate the holistic approach implemented in this well-balanced comprehensive program. French beginners can enroll in the school until the 3rd grade through a specially designed immersion program. In addition to French, students have the option of learning a number of languages, including Arabic, German, Latin, and Spanish, some starting as early as 4th grade.
Field trips are an important part of their academic enrichment and students actively engage in a number of extracurricular activities, including, Model UN, soccer, theater, volleyball, or rock climbing. In 9th grade (3e), Rochambeau students can continue with the French curriculum, culminating in the French International Baccalauréat, or can switch to the International Baccalaureate track in 9th and 10th grade. This gives our students the distinct advantage to select a diploma program that best suits their learning styles and goals. Rochambeau is one of three schools in North America to offer the IB Advanced Bilingual Diploma, another option of the IDBP in 11th and 12th grade. Students can also receive their US high school diploma at the end of 11th grade. Graduates of Rochambeau go on to study in both the US and internationally, attending some of the top universities around the world.
