Shanghai United International School was founded in 2003 and was authorized as an IB World School in 2010.
Situated in Shanghai it caters for more than 2,300 students on two campus, Hongqiao and Gubei. Hongqiao Campus offers IB PYP, Gubei Secondary Campus offers Key Stage 3, IGCSE and IBDP.
Students are drawn from more than 40 nationalities, represented across the schools. Close links with nearby Chinese primary and secondary schools allow for rich academic and cultural exchanges leading to the enhancement of the school's signature 'East meets West' characteristic.
At the end of Grade 5, students are bilingual, proficient in both Chinese and English and able to comfortably access the curriculum of their secondary school. Some students use three languages with ease.
Augmenting the academic work of the school is a wide-ranging programme of extracurricular activities catering for the cerebral, the athletic, the artistic and the social aspects of life - hugely supported and enjoyed by the students. The aim of the school is to produce students who are prepared to live life to the full and to contribute to making the world a better place for all.
School facilities include an extensive games field, a 400 seat auditorium, an indoor heated swimming pool, a very large gymnasium and a cultural centre for the benefit of the students (and community at weekends). The range of laboratories and specialist teaching rooms necessary to support the IB programmes are also available.
Staff are recruited from many countries, with the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia being particularly well represented. This staff teaches alongside highly qualified and talented local Chinese teachers to provide a practical cross-cultural pedagogical framework in which students thrive. A comprehensive programme of staff professional development, both locally and internationally, is in place to enhance IB skills and to develop further the expertise of all staff.
Living in Shanghai at the beginning of the 21st century is an extraordinary opportunity for students to be part of a rapidly developing social and economic milieux, with all the benefits and opportunities this possesses. Shanghai United International School is ideally positioned to work with students to maximize their learning in preparation for being truly global citizens.
